Many guidebooks describe Belize as a year-round destination, but we really don’t think it is. The weather varies between the Caribbean coast, the cayes, and the inland jungle. Many areas have their own microclimates, and timing your trip can make a big difference to diving conditions, wildlife experiences, and overall travel costs.

We travelled in Belize for nearly a month and found that the best time really depends on what you want to do. Some months offer calmer seas and better visibility for snorkelling and diving, while others bring fewer crowds, lower prices, or better conditions for exploring inland ruins and rainforests.

When to visit Belize – the quick answer

Belize might be Central America’s second smallest country, but it’s incredibly diverse. From tropical Caribbean beaches and coral reefs to jungle-covered mountains and ancient Mayan ruins, timing your visit can make a huge difference to your Belize itinerary.

We visited Belize slap-bang in the middle of the dry season, which runs from November to May. We were treated to sunny skies, warm temperatures, and calm seas, which were perfect for sailing along the Belize Barrier Reef, snorkelling and diving on coral formations, hiking trails through the jungle, and exploring Mayan sites.

While some of the best things to do in Belize can be done year-round, others can be cancelled due to the weather. The wet season, from June to October, is greener, quieter, and cheaper, but afternoon downpours and occasional tropical storms can affect travel, particularly in remote jungle areas.

For most travellers, late February to April is ideal for visiting Belize – after the holiday crowds have dissipated but before the wet season really sets in. Shoulder months like May or October can work too, if you’re flexible and budget-conscious.

The best time to visit Belize for weather

Belize has a tropical climate with warm, humid weather year-round. Temperatures remain warm year-round, ranging from around 24-32°C (75-90°F).

Coastal areas, including Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Hopkins, and Placencia, are hot and humid almost all the time. While inland hills and highlands, like the Hummingbird Highway, Mountain Pine Ridge Forest, and San Ignacio in the Cayo District, are slightly cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings.

It’s also worth noting that the Belize Barrier Reef has its own microclimate, and short tropical showers are more common out on the islands and at sea, even during the dry season. These are usually brief and followed by sunshine, but they can affect visibility and sea conditions, particularly in the afternoons.

Belize weather by seasons

Belize has two main seasons rather than four: a dry season and a wet season, with a few shoulder months in between.

Dry season (November-May) – The most popular time to visit Belize. Expect plenty of sun, calmer waters, and drier trails, perfect for reef trips, hiking, and jungle adventures.
Wet season (June-October) – The jungle is lush, waterfalls are impressive, and there are fewer tourists, but heavy afternoon showers, high humidity, and occasional tropical storms mean you’ll need flexibility with your plans.

We’d personally recommend visiting Belize between February and March for the sweet spot of good weather and fewer crowds, especially if you’re hoping for calm water for snorkelling or SCUBA diving and lounging on beaches.

Extreme weather and hurricanes in Belize

Belize sits within the Caribbean hurricane zone, so it can be affected by tropical storms and hurricanes during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June to November, with the highest risk typically between August and October.

While direct hits are relatively uncommon, storms can still bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, flooding, and rough seas, particularly along the coast and cayes. This can disrupt travel plans, including boat transfers, snorkelling and diving trips, and access to more remote areas. Inland regions can also experience flooding and difficult road conditions during prolonged rain.

If you’re visiting during this period, it’s worth keeping an eye on local weather forecasts and allowing some flexibility in your itinerary. Travel insurance that covers weather-related disruptions is also a sensible precaution.

The best time to visit Belize for wildlife

Belize is surprisingly rich in wildlife for such a small country. From monkeys swinging through the trees and scarlet macaws flashing across the sky to manatees and sea turtles drifting lazily off the coast, there are lots of animals to see in Belize, but when you visit will dictate your chances of a sighting.

The dry season is generally the easiest time of year to spot wildlife. Jungle trails are drier and more accessible, the sea is calmer, and animals are easier to see without the interruption of heavy rain.

Inland in Belize’s nature reserves, you can see animals like howler monkeys, coati, and toucans year-round. We even saw a jaguar in Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, which was pure fluke. Birders can enjoy spotting over 600 species of birds, including the brightly-coloured scarlet macaws, particularly from December to March.

On the coast, sea turtles nest mainly from June to September, with hatchlings emerging from July to October. You can swim with them year-round on a snorkelling tour. Swimming with manatees in Belize is one of the coolest things we’ve ever done and is also year-round, although conditions are better in the dry season. And while it’s widely said that whale shark season runs from March to June, declining numbers sadly mean that sightings have all but stopped.

The best time to visit Belize for snorkelling

The dry season, when the seas are calm and visibility is at its clearest, is the best time to visit Belize for snorkelling. The Caribbean waters along Belize’s islands and atolls provide optimal conditions for exploring coral reefs, tropical fish, rays, and other marine life.

Mornings are typically calmer and clearer than afternoons throughout the year, making them the ideal time to head out, especially for popular sites like Shark Ray Alley in Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which can feel crowded in the peak season. Shoulder months can offer a compromise between clearer conditions and smaller crowds, though water clarity may vary depending on rainfall.

In February/March, when we visited, we experienced beautiful snorkel conditions and only a couple of short-lived showers on our departure at the start of a 3-day sailing trip, but we thankfully ended up with glorious weather for sailing to remote islands, including Tobacco Caye and Rendezvous Caye.

The best time to visit Belize for SCUBA diving

SCUBA diving conditions in Belize follow a similar pattern to snorkelling. The dry season is ideal for SCUBA diving in Belize, with calm seas, excellent visibility, and more predictable diving conditions at dive sites like the Great Blue Hole and Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Currents are usually mild and water clarity is usually highest between February and April.

During the wet season, conditions are less predictable. Visibility can drop slightly, and currents may be stronger, but there are fewer divers, making the experience quieter. Morning dives are preferable throughout the year, as afternoon winds and swells tend to make conditions rougher.

Despite visiting in the dry season, when it should have been pretty nice, it wasn’t smooth sailing (quite literally). We had several days in San Pedro, where high winds cancelled all our boat tours, and a really traumatic experience diving in Caye Caulker, where the operator took us out in a storm. Luckily, we had enough time in our itinerary to reschedule dive trips, and it was made up for by an epic experience later in Gladden Spit Marine Reserve.

The best time to visit Belize for outdoor activities

Belize offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including jungle hikes, cave tubing, ziplining, kayaking, and exploring Mayan Ruins. Dry-season conditions make these activities easier and safer, with firmer trails, calmer rivers, and better access to remote areas.

Belize’s Mayan Ruins are almost entirely outdoors, so they are more pleasant to experience in the sunshine, although accessible sites like Xunantunich and Cahal Pech near San Ignacio are easy to visit year-round. More remote sites like Caracol are harder to get to in the wet season, when the roads are rougher, driving in Belize is trickier, and a 4×4 is recommended.

In the wet season, trails can be muddy and slippery, rivers may be more difficult to navigate, and some remote excursions like the popular ATM Cave may be limited or temporarily closed. However, the wet season also brings lush green landscapes and fuller rivers, making water-based activities like kayaking or tubing more dramatic.

Planning outdoor activities for the mornings, when rainfall is less frequent, is generally advisable during the wet season. We frequently had popular nature reserves like St. Herman’s Blue Hole National Park all to ourselves.

The best time to visit Belize to escape the crowds

The dry season, from November to May, is the busiest time in Belize, particularly in popular destinations in Belize like Ambergris Caye, Placencia, and along the reef, as well as inland hubs such as San Ignacio. Popular tourist sites, snorkelling tours, and excursions can be crowded during these months and booking in advance is recommended.

Shoulder months like May, early June, and September to October provide a quieter alternative. These months generally offer a mix of good weather and manageable rainfall, as well as fewer tourists, and are the cheapest times to visit Belize, with lower prices on hotels, jungle lodges, and tours. The trade-off is some risk of rain disrupting outdoor plans, particularly in the jungle and lowlands.

The best time to visit Belize for local events

Belize has a busy calendar of cultural events throughout the year. Carnival in September features parades, music, and dancing in Belize City. Garifuna Settlement Day on November 19 turns the streets of Dangriga into parades of traditional drumming, dances, and ceremonies.

Food lovers can plan trips around Lobster Fest, held annually in San Pedro, Caye Caulker, and Placencia during June and July, when the local catch is celebrated with music, food, and community gatherings. Other regional festivals, such as the multi-month Belize International Film Festival and the Chocolate Festival in March, highlight the country’s rich cultural and culinary traditions.

Holidays like Christmas and Easter are also widely celebrated, with religious ceremonies, street markets, and community festivities taking place across the country. They’re incredibly busy and prices soar, but they’re a vibe to experience.

What is the best month to visit Belize?

Belize is generally considered a year-round destination, but the best month to visit depends on what you want to do and see. The dry season, from November to May, offers the most reliable weather for outdoor activities, snorkelling, SCUBA diving, and exploring Mayan ruins. These months bring calmer seas, clearer skies, and accessible trails, making it ideal for travellers who want predictability and maximum visibility.

Our general rule of thumb when planning a trip is to knock a month off either side of the dry season and plan our trip outside the very peak. For Belize’s dry season of November to May, we’d plan our trip between December and April, while avoiding the peak holiday season from mid-December to mid-January.

Personally, we had a great time in Februrary to March and would choose this period again to revisit. We had lovely weather almost the whole time.

Unlike other countries in Central America, where you can still have a fun time in the wet season, so much of Belize’s appeal is tied to its outdoor activities and ocean adventures that we really don’t think it’s worth visiting in the rainy season.

Shoulder months (May, June, September, and October) would be a good compromise if you want lower prices and fewer crowds, with a less predictable mix of rain and sun.
