Isla de Flores (Flores Island) may be a small island town, but it’s filled with incredible places to eat. You’ll find everything from family-run comedores serving Guatemalan staples to rooftop cocktail bars with lake views at sunset.

Eating out is one of our favourite things to do, and we love trying authentic dishes in a new country (although we often have to seek out the veggie version). Luckily, eating out is one of the best things to do in Flores. We found some really great restaurants in Flores – some with colourful ambience and fun vibes, others with leafy green courtyards and lake views – and have put them all together in this food guide.

Where to eat in Flores

Limited grocery stores and inflated prices make self-catering on Isla de Flores tricky, but knowing where to eat out, especially when you have limited time, can be even harder. Luckily, around the cobbled streets, you can find everything from local restaurants to Italian trattorias, Mexican taco joints, and vegan-friendly cafés. Street food stalls pop up in the evenings, offering cheap bites like tacos for just a few quetzales.

Many restaurants also make the most of the scenery with open-air or lakeside seating with epic sunset views, so it’s worth planning to eat out during your Guatemala itinerary. We’ve rounded up the top cafés, bars, and restaurants in Flores in this post.

The best restaurants in Flores

Flores has a growing reputation for quality dining, especially with its lakeside restaurants, although there are some great spots in the town, too. It’s one of our favourite places in Guatemala for food – here are our top spots.

1. Maracuya

Maracuya is our favourite restaurant in Flores, and we’re still dreaming about it now. The setting itself is unbeatable, with a lush green courtyard filled with plants, lake views through the trees, and there’s even a butterfly garden. You can sit outside or opt for the indoor seating, with white-washed walls and a rooftop adorned with wooden décor and even more plants. They’ve even got a fireman’s pole from the top to the ground floor, which Dan, of course, had to slide down!

The food is excellent, with a great range of Guatemalan and Thai cuisine, as well as other international staples. They’re open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with plenty of menu items to choose from, as well as smoothies, coffee, and a bakery section.

They also specialise in freshly shaken cocktails (what I wouldn’t give for one of those maracuya (passionfruit) martinis right now). The food felt healthy without being boring – they made me an incredible vegan Pad Thai, and Dan got to try a vegetarian version of Pepián, the national dish of Guatemala.

2. Teengo’s

A casual, colourful spot, Teengo’s is one of the top vegetarian-friendly restaurants in Flores. It enticed us with its bright yellow façade, and the food was delicious. You can order everything from tacos (teengos) and nachos to shareable plates, and they’ve got a separate vegetarian menu with lots of options. They even do ‘tacopizzas‘ if you’re after something really unique.

The décor is simple and modern, with colourful tables and fans, which keeps prices reasonable, and they have long opening hours, so it works for breakfast, lunch, or a late dinner.

3. Secret Garden

Tucked away inside Los Amigos Hostel, one of the best places to stay in Flores, the Secret Garden restaurant is like an indoor oasis. Decorated in jungle plants, colourful murals, and flickering lanterns, it’s one of the prettiest restaurants we found in Flores.

It’s more international fare than local dishes, with burgers, pizza, and pasta on the menu, but we found plenty of great veggie options. The vibe is upbeat without being over the top – the hostel feels social in a friendly way and you won’t feel out of place, even if you’re not staying here.

4. Bistro Puertas del Cielo

An Italian bistro known for personalised plates and higher-end cooking on the island, Puertas del Cielo is one of the most unique restaurants in Flores, as it doesn’t have a menu! Instead, you can enjoy a chef-driven meal, where owner Bernie chats to you about your tastes, dietary requirements, and his fresh ingredients, and then prepares you a custom-made dish of whatever you like (although pasta and Mediterranean-style mains are a speciality).

The restaurant sits centrally on the island and offers a small, intimate dining room plus terrace seating with views toward the water. Not having listed prices can be a bit intimidating, but the costs are very reasonable (although not cheap for Flores), with a main being around 100Q ($13 USD). If you’re after a date night spot or celebrating something special, this is the place to go.

The best cheap eats in Flores

For budget-friendly bites, Flores is full of local comedores and street stalls where you can grab a filling meal or a simple snack.

5. Tacos Los Peces

For a cheap meal in Flores, head straight to the Central Parque. A hilltop gathering place with a basketball court, small cathedral, and lake views, this is the place to be on an evening. A handful of food stalls, like the well-renowned Tacos Los Peces, open serving street food like tacos, burritos, and quesadillas fresh off the griddle for just a couple of quetzales.

While it’s no-frills Mexican cuisine, it’s not really the same as what you’d find in Mexico, but it’s affordable, hot, and filling, so it’s hard to complain. They couldn’t really do any veggie options for us, although Dan managed with tostados topped with avo, beans, and salsa. They also offer refreshing cold drinks (aguas frescas or refrescos) – sodas or bottles of water mixed with fruit and floral flavours, like mango and tamarindo.

6. Yogulato

Yogulato is the go-to ice cream and frozen yoghurt spot in Flores when you want something sweet and refreshing. It’s located on the western part of the island with a nice outdoor terrace, so it’s a great spot for ending the day with sunset views over the lake.

The flavours are creative, with everything from mango and cardamom fro-yo to strawberry and matcha gelatos. They also serve smoothies, crepes, and coffee if you’re after something a little more savoury.

The vibe is casual with cone or cup options, simple toppings, and friendly service. It’s open from morning until late evening, so it works whether you want a midday cool-down or an after-dinner treat.

The best coffee shops, breakfast, and brunch café in Flores

Flores has a handful of charming cafés perfect for a morning coffee or a slow brunch, serving everything from strong Guatemalan coffee and fresh juice or smoothies to pastries and pancakes.

7. Delirio

A popular local bakery and café, also referred to as Panaderia la Isla (the island bakery), Delirio specialises in artisan breads, pastries, and good coffee. We have a habit of always starting the day with a coffee, so this was a great place for us – they even had almond milk.

Delirio is located on the bottom floor of Hotel Isla de Flores, a beautiful boutique hotel, with the prettiest pale blue and pink decorations on its exterior. We’d recommend popping in here for a morning pastry to take on an island walk or for a slice of cake after a long day out. We grabbed breakfast to go from here before our shuttle to Semuc Champey (and we needed it to fuel us through the 9-hour journey). But they also do light lunches of soups and salad bowls, too.

8. Maple y Tocino

A dedicated breakfast/brunch spot on Flores with bright, friendly décor and a menu focused on pancakes, waffles, avocado toast, Maple y Tocino (maple and bacon) serves international morning favourites. It’s a go-to for hearty starts before a day trip to Tikal, with excellent breakfast combos. It’s also right on the lake’s edge, with amazing views across the water.

The café atmosphere is casual and family-friendly, with portions large enough to fuel a morning of exploring, although they serve lunch and dinner, too. Prices are mid-range for breakfast on the island, and it’s often busier during peak morning hours (so plan a bit of time). If you’re a sweet tooth, get one of their iconic milkshakes, which come with a doughnut on top!

9. Cool Beans

A longtime traveller favourite with a shady, garden-style setting and an all-day menu that covers big breakfasts, sandwiches, smoothies, and vegetarian options, Cool Beans is part laidback restaurant, part dive bar. The décor is funky yet homey and relaxed, with hammocks, plenty of plants, and cushioned seating, which makes it a popular place to linger over coffee or use as a base to plan tours.

Dishes are generous (great for refuelling before a long day), with popular options like waffles, burritos, and sandwiches. They’re especially well-known for their coffee and craft beers. While not as high a standard as other restaurants on this list, it’s still a top spot to eat in Flores if you’re after something simple and affordable.

10. Café Mena

Nestled on the ground floor of the vibrantly turquoise Hotel Santana, Café Mena is a compact, waterfront café that’s become known for strong Guatemalan coffee, fresh juices, and pleasant sunset views from its terrace. The décor is clean and modern with comfortable seating that invites relaxing with a book or simply soaking up the vibes.

The menu focuses on coffee-house staples like espresso drinks, smoothies, light breakfasts, and lunches like soups and salads. If you want coffee with a view and quick bites, Café Mena is a good choice.

The best bars in Flores

As the sun sets over Lake Petén Itzá, Flores transforms into a lively but laid-back spot for drinks. Rooftop bars are especially popular, offering panoramic views and a front-row seat to dramatic sunsets. Those in search of nightlife can find places with live music, dancing, and cocktails that keep flowing late into the night.

11. Sky Bar

Sky Bar is one of the most popular rooftop bars in Flores, with one of the island’s most celebrated sunset views. Located on Calle La Unión, it’s the place many visitors head to for cocktails as the sun drops behind the hills. As well as wines and beers, the food menu skews international, serving burgers, grilled fish, and pastas, and is designed to pair with drinks and the panorama rather than being a formal restaurant experience.

The rooftop vibe is relaxed and social, which is good for groups, couples, or anyone who wants skyline photos. We met another Brit here and spent a few hours swapping stories of our travels as the sun went down. Don’t miss Happy Hour, between 2:00 PM-9:00 PM, where cocktails are 2-for-1!

12. L’idiot

A small, characterful café-bar near the Banda Musical area of Flores, L’idiot blends casual daytime coffee service with an intimate evening bar vibe. The daytime menu features sandwiches, light meals and good coffee, while the place focuses on craft cocktails and a curated small-plate menu by night.

The décor is elegant yet simple, reminding us of the relaxed neighbourhood feel you find in more authentic parts of France.

Other places to eat and drink in Flores

We didn’t have time to try everywhere we wanted to go in Flores, and there are some places that just didn’t make the cut, but are still highly-rated and popular places to eat and drink in Flores, including:

  • Terrazzo – A lakeside restaurant known for its Italian-style pizzas and pasta, with open-air seating and sunset views over Lake Petén Itzá.
  • Restaurante Tipico Imperio #1 & #2 – Two classic local eateries praised for their affordable, traditional Guatemalan dishes, especially their tortillas, beans, local stews, and home-style cooking in bright, mural-decorated dining rooms.
  • San Telmo – A smaller restaurant offering Asian and fusion dishes in a mid-price range – a nice change from strictly local or Western menus.
  • Achiote – Hotel Isla de Flores’ restaurant, offering a menu celebrating Guatemala’s culinary heritage with local ingredients, open from early morning through dinner.
  • Mangos Bar -The Hotel Isla de Flores rooftop, popular for its sunset perch, casual menu (grilled dishes and drinks), and relaxed open-air setting.

Where to buy groceries in Flores

If you’re staying in Flores for more than a couple of days, you might consider self-catering to save some money, but it’s going to be tricky. On the island itself, you’ll find several small corner shops and mini-markets selling basics like water, snacks, and household goods. While this is perfect if you just need something quick, they’re really expensive!

For a wider selection, head over the causeway to Santa Elena, where you can shop at larger supermarkets. There’s also a lively municipal market in Santa Elena where you can browse stalls piled high with fruits, vegetables, and local ingredients. There’s a small tourist bus that runs between the island and Santa Elena, which is useful.

Flores Food and Drink FAQs

Now you know our favourite places to eat in Flores, we’ve answered these frequently asked questions, so you know what to expect.

What food should I try in Flores?

Seafood is especially popular thanks to Flores sitting on Lake Petén Itzá, and many restaurants serve freshly grilled fish with rice, beans, and plantains. You’ll also find classics like pepián (a spiced stew) and kak’ik (a turkey soup with Mayan roots), which are worth trying while travelling Guatemala. Street food is great for those on a budget – try tostadas topped with avocado and salsa, or elotes (grilled corn) sold by vendors in the evening. If you like sweets, look out for traditional desserts such as rellenitos (plantains stuffed with sweet beans).

What drink should I try in Flores?

You can’t go wrong with a cold Gallo beer, Guatemala’s most popular lager, which pairs perfectly with lake views. Rum lovers should sample Ron Zacapa, a high-quality Guatemalan rum that’s often served neat or in cocktails. For something refreshing without alcohol, locals often drink rosa de jamaica (hibiscus tea) or horchata made with rice, cinnamon, and sugar. And if you’re up early, Guatemalan coffee is world-famous – smooth, rich, and best enjoyed in one of Flores’ lakeside cafés.

Where do the locals eat in Flores?

Most locals head off the island to Santa Elena, where there are plenty of inexpensive eateries and market food stalls serving traditional Guatemalan dishes. On Flores itself, you’ll find family-run comedores and simple restaurants tucked away on quieter streets, often serving hearty plates of rice, beans, meat, and tortillas at very affordable prices.

Are there restaurants on the lake in Flores?

Some of the best dining experiences in Flores are right on the waterfront, and we’d consider dinner with a view one of the best things to do in Guatemala. Several restaurants and cafés, including Maracuys and Maple y Tocino, have terraces that extend over Lake Petén Itzá, giving you a stunning view while you eat. At sunset, rooftop bars like Sky Bar fill up quickly with travellers sipping cocktails or enjoying the view as the sky turns pink and orange.

Are the restaurants in Flores good?

For a small town, the quality of restaurants in Flores is surprisingly high. You’ll find everything from cheap eats and traditional Guatemalan plates to more refined restaurants with creative menus. The atmosphere is usually relaxed and friendly, and service tends to be informal but welcoming. However, we do think Antigua’s restaurants are better, with a wider variety of options (although we honestly think Antigua is one of the best food cities in the world, so we’re biased).

Is Flores vegan-friendly?

Flores has a growing number of vegan and vegetarian options, and we never went hungry. Many cafés and restaurants offer plant-based dishes like veggie burgers, pasta, and sandwiches, made with local produce. Even traditional comedores often have bean or vegetable-based plates if you ask, though menus aren’t always labelled. Smoothie bars and juice stands also make it easy to find something fresh and vegan-friendly.

What is the average price of a meal in Flores?

Prices of food in Flores are fairly reasonable compared to larger tourist hubs in Guatemala. At a local comedor, you can expect a hearty set lunch (plato típico with meat, rice, beans, and tortillas) for around 25-40Q ($3-5 USD). Mid-range restaurants with lakeside views usually charge 50-100Q ($8-12 USD) for mains like pasta, fresh fish, or curries. Higher-end spots and boutique hotel restaurants can go up to 150-200Q ($20-25 USD) for a three-course meal. Drinks are also affordable, with local beers costing around 15-20Q ($2-3 USD).
