When planning our Guatemala itinerary, we went round in circles trying to decide where to stay in Semuc Champey, flip-flopping between whether we should choose a hostel in Lanquín or a lodge near the park entrance. Add to that the fact that so many accommodations had terrible reviews with warnings of scams and food poisoning – it really felt like a bit of a minefield.

Where to stay to visit Semuc Champey?
Semuc Champey may be one of the best places to visit in Guatemala, but because of its location deep in the remote jungle, accommodation options are split between two main areas:
Each location offers a different experience – staying close to Semuc Champey means you’ll wake up within walking distance of the pools, while Lanquín offers a few more local services, restaurants, and transport connections.
There’s also Cobán, the largest city near Semuc Champey, where you’ll likely pass through to reach Lanquín. It’s around 2 hours’ drive between the two, but more of a transit hub than a practical base. Most people stay in Lanquín or near the natural monument.
Semuc Champey
Staying near the Semuc Champey Natural Monument puts you within walking distance of the famous turquoise pools, which means you can arrive early before day-trippers appear. Most accommodation here consists of jungle lodges and backpacker hostels set along the dirt road leading to the park.
Some accommodations are right outside the park entrance, while others are up to a 45-minute walk away. Electricity, WiFi, and hot water can be inconsistent, too. The trade-off is a stunning setting of thick jungle, river views, and the ability to visit the pools at quieter times of day.
Lanquín
The closest town to Semuc Champey is Lanquín, which is home to the most affordable hostels and hotels. The town serves as the main transport hub for the region and is where the shuttles around Guatemala and beyond pick up and drop off, and you’ll likely arrive here on your way to Semuc Champey.
Lanquín is about 20-30 minutes away from the pools by 4×4 pickup truck (camioneta) along a winding road, but most hotels organise daily shuttles and tours for guests. Accommodation here ranges from budget hostels to mid-range hotels, often with pools, restaurants, and more reliable electricity than jungle lodges.
The town itself is small but has a few cafés, shops, and tour operators, making it easier to organise onward travel or excursions. If you want more flexibility and options for eating out, this is the better choice.

1. Hostal El Portal
Hostal El Portal is one of the closest places near the entrance of the natural monument, making it a convenient base for visiting the pools. The Guatemalan-owned hostel offers a mix of dorms and private rooms, along with a restaurant, bar, and an iconic pool overlooking the Cahabón River.
Social areas with hammocks and river access make it a relaxed place to spend the afternoon after exploring the park. Its proximity to the pools makes it especially popular with backpackers who want to maximise time at Semuc Champey, but the trade-off is pretty basic accommodation and no air conditioning.
2. Greengo’s
Greengo’s is a popular hotel nestled in the jungle, down the road from the natural monument. Accommodation includes dorm beds (with female-only dormitories available) and simple private rooms in A-frame cabins, with mosquito nets, fans, and basic furnishings.
The on-site restaurant and bar is one of the better dining options in the area, while the small pool and riverside access provide places to cool off from the humidity of the steamy jungle. They use solar-powered energy and have high-speed satellite internet.
You can also arrange tours like river tubing and chocolate workshops, as well as shuttles to your next destination.
3. Pachamaya River Hostel
Pachamaya River Hostel is a rustic jungle retreat located on the northern banks of the Cahabón River, a short walk from the park entrance. The property is inspired by nature, with wooden cabins and dorms set within the forest, although they don’t have air conditioning or a fan.
The lodge features a swimming pool, open-air dining area, yoga platform, and restaurant with good vegetarian and vegan options. Activities on offer include yoga and meditation, with free WiFi in public areas.
4. B’antiox Guesthouse
B’antiox Guesthouse is a unique eco-lodge and private nature reserve within walking distance of Semuc Champey’s entrance. It’s the only non-party place in the immediate area, with accommodation that consists of a private treehouse, an observatory treehouse, and a garden cottage. It’s really unique, and you won’t see many other guests.
B’antiox offers a free educational tour of the reserve, as well as a chocolate-making class. You can also spot Guatemalan wildlife in the reserve and enjoy the mountain views. There’s an on-site dining room where family-style meals are served, too.
We would have loved to have stayed here, but we were a bit last-minute with our planning, and it was fully booked. Be sure to book in advance.
5. Utopia Eco Hotel
Utopia Eco Hotel is a mid-range eco-friendly lodge in a peaceful jungle. At about 45 minutes’ walk from the entrance, it’s easier to visit on a tour or by pickup, but the option is there.
Rooms are basic but comfortable, with nook-style dorm beds and private cabanas. The property has communal areas for relaxing after a day of exploring and an on-site restaurant with good veggie and vegan options.
We love the focus on sustainability and wellness, with community projects, a yoga shala, a working cacao farm, and an outdoor callisthenics gym. This is our kind of place (eco-friendly, yoga, and nature), but its location was a downside, as we’d have been locked into a meal plan and tour/transport through the hotel. We think this is a good option if you’re spending more than one full day in Semuc Champey – stay 2-3 nights or longer to have time to enjoy the accommodation as well as the pools and the surrounding jungle.
6. Mountain Nest
Mountain Nest is an adults-only bed and breakfast perched on a hillside about halfway between Semuc Champey and Lanquín, offering stunning views over the river valley and forest. Accommodation includes modern cabins with private bathrooms, kitchenettes, and terraces, designed to blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.
The lodge offers mostly vegetarian and vegan-friendly meals, and the staff can help plan excursions to Semuc Champey, local caves, and the surrounding mountains. It’s located down a rough track and is pretty remote, so it’s best suited to travellers who want to spend some time unplugging in nature.

7. Zephyr Lodge
Probably the most popular place to stay in Semuc Champey and Lanquín, Zephyr Lodge is the backpacker, party hostel. Known for its dramatic hilltop location overlooking the surrounding jungle, the property has dorms and private rooms, along with a restaurant, bar, and infinity pool with sweeping views.
Social areas, games, and organised activities create a lively backpacker atmosphere, while tours and daily transport to Semuc Champey can be arranged directly through the lodge. It’s a great option for travellers looking for a social stay with memorable views, as it can be very loud and busy. Don’t stay here unless you like a bit of a boogie, as many people come to Zephyr just to party all day long.
8. El Retiro Lodge
El Retiro Lodge is a more laidback hotel than other nearby hostels, sitting just beside the river outside Lanquín. The property includes dorms, private rooms, and rustic cabins with mosquito nets and private or shared bathrooms.
The lodge has a pool, common areas with hammocks, and a bar/restaurant serving breakfast and dinner by the river. Transport to Semuc Champey can be arranged through the lodge, as well as adventure activities, such as cave tours, waterfall hikes, and river tubing. Wi-Fi is also available in common areas.
This is where we stayed, and what cinched it for us really was the option of air-conditioning, which, after spending time in the jungle in Tikal, we knew was going to be a necessity. You can read our review in the next section below.
9. Hostal Oasis The Traveler
Hostal Oasis The Traveler is a sociable riverside lodge with both dorms and private rooms with basic bathrooms, and is spread out around gardens, a swimming pool, and shady lounge areas right next to the river – there’s even a slide into the water for cooling off after a day of exploring.
On-site, there’s a restaurant and bar serving American, Spanish, and international cuisines, offering lunch, dinner, high tea, and cocktails. The staff can help you book tour shuttles to Semuc Champey or other nearby attractions.
10. Casa Mary
Casa Mary is a small guesthouse in Lanquín offering basic but comfortable accommodation. The property has private rooms with fans and shared bathrooms.
Its central location makes it easy to access transport and local shops, and there’s a minimarket, outdoor seating area, and picnic area on-site. While facilities are simple, it provides a convenient and cheap base for visiting Semuc Champey.

El Retiro Lodge Review
After lots of research, we chose to stay in El Retiro Lodge, and it worked perfectly as a base for two nights, allowing us one full day at Semuc Champey Natural Monument. Nestled in the hills above Lanquín, it gave us the best of both worlds, being right on the river with beautiful mountain views, but a walk or short tuk-tuk ride into the town.
El Retiro Lodge has comfortable rooms, with a variety of shared or private, depending on your budget. We chose a private room, which was very spacious, with plenty of space for our luggage and a private bathroom and shower. We used our own mosquito net (which we tend to do wherever we travel) and were super thankful for the air conditioning, as we visited in peak dry season (the best time to visit Guatemala).
The staff were all lovely and really helpful. We booked round-trip transfers to Semuc Champey and our shuttle to Antigua afterwards, which were super smooth. The tour to Semuc Champey is super affordable, too, but we wanted to hike the mirador in the morning, which is why we went independently.
We liked being so close to Lanquín without sacrificing that feeling of being in nature. We had a beautiful sunset over the mountains and even a rope swing directly into the river, but we were only a 15-minute walk or so to the centre of town, where we could explore the main square, see stunning street art, and use the ATM. Tuk-tuks also whizz up and down the hill, which can take you faster for a few quetzales, which we used a couple of times.
The lodge has a nice social vibe without being obnoxious, and we enjoyed sipping gin by the river and playing pool with other travellers. What was really nice was that we met a traveller who was on our shuttle to Lanquín and stayed in El Retiro too. We did Semuc Champey together the next day and even bumped into him again in Antigua and at the top of Acatenango Volcano later in our trip!
Can you stay in Semuc Champey?
Technically, you can’t stay inside the protected area of Semuc Champey itself, although it is one of the best things to do in Guatemala. The pools have been designated a Natural Monument, which is like a national park or nature reserve, and there’s no accommodation inside the area.

Location
The biggest decision when choosing accommodation around Semuc Champey is whether to stay near the pools themselves or in Lanquín. We’ve covered the pros and cons extensively above, but the decision is ultimately personal.
Price
Accommodation in the Semuc Champey and Lanquín area is generally budget to mid-range, with very few luxury options. Most places are simple jungle lodges or backpacker hostels, with dorm beds and basic private rooms being the most common setup. Prices are typically slightly higher closer to the park due to the remote location and transport logistics. In Lanquín, you’ll find slightly cheaper options and a bit more choice.
Amenities
Facilities in this region can be fairly basic, particularly if you stay close to Semuc Champey. Air conditioning is rare, and many properties rely on fans instead. Wi-Fi is often slow or limited to reception areas, and electricity can occasionally be intermittent, depending on the lodge. Some hostels have swimming pools, restaurants, and organised tours, while others are much more rustic. Mosquito nets are common in accommodation around Semuc Champey, especially in dorm rooms and simple jungle cabins, but can sometimes have holes in them, which renders them pretty useless – we always travel with our own. It’s worth checking what’s included before booking, especially if things like reliable Wi-Fi or private bathrooms are important to you.
Bugs
Being deep in the jungle means bugs are part of the experience. Mosquitoes, beetles, and the occasional gecko or spider aren’t unusual, particularly in more rustic lodges with open-air designs. That said, it’s usually manageable with natural mosquito repellent and a net at night. Although we didn’t find it as bad as Río Dulce, another traveller we met actually had a snake in his room! Needless to say, we did a thorough spider check each night (I’m terrified of them), and Dan did have to save me from a big one on our floor one night.
Bad reviews
When reading reviews for accommodation in the area, it helps to keep the remote setting in mind. Complaints about slow Wi-Fi, bugs, or basic facilities are fairly common simply because you’re staying in the middle of the jungle. However, it’s still worth paying attention to consistent issues around cleanliness, safety, or customer service. Some hostels exist purely for partying with loud music pumping all day long, so it’s worth clocking the reviews to match the vibe of the place to your taste.
