Choosing where to stay around Lake Skadar can have a surprisingly big impact on your experience. The lake stretches across a huge area, and the two most popular bases, Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića, feel completely different and are an hour’s drive apart. One is a busy little gateway for boat trips, while the other is quieter, more scenic, and surrounded by the winding roads and dramatic landscapes that make this one of the most beautiful parts of Montenegro. Add to that the sprawling wine region in the south, and it’s no wonder there’s an overwhelming amount of options.
We stayed around Lake Skadar for a week, moving from Rijeka Crnojevića to the wine region around Virpazar, comparing each area and accommodation type, from budget hotels to locally-owned vineyards. In this accommodation guide, we’ll compare Virpazar and Rijeka Crnojevića as bases for visiting Lake Skadar, explain which is best for different types of travellers, and share our favourite hotels, guesthouses, boutique stays, and vineyards to help you choose the right place to book.

Where to stay near Lake Skadar National Park
Lake Skadar is the largest in the Balkans, with countless villages and small towns on its shore. It’s also fairly easily accessible from major towns and cities on the coast and the capital Podgorica, so it’s a popular day trip destination. But to really make the most of your visit, we personally think you need to spend a few nights in the area.
The first thing you need to know when looking at accommodation near Lake Skadar is that it isn’t really one destination. The main places to stay around the lake area are:

Virpazar
Virpazar is the main gateway to Lake Skadar National Park, sitting where several waterways meet before opening into the lake. The village is tiny, but it’s packed with restaurants, guesthouses, boat operators, wine sellers, and the national park’s visitor centre, making it by far the easiest base if you want everything within walking distance.
The village itself is split into two small areas, with the visitor centre and main harbour on one side and more accommodation and restaurants further through the village over the bridge, and around a 5-10 minute walk between them. Accommodation in Virpazar isn’t super extensive, but there’s a good range of budget and boutique properties.
Virpazar has been an important market and trading settlement for centuries, with its name reflecting its historic role as a marketplace and its position where waterways meet Lake Skadar. The Ottoman-built Besac Fortress overlooks the village, while the settlement later became a small lake port trading goods including fish and wine. Today it is home to boat operators and a smattering of cafés, restaurants, and shops, including a Voli supermarket.
The harbour is where you’ll find most boat departures. If you’re planning an early-morning boat trip, Virpazar is a great base, with a wide variety of operators. The downside is that it can feel considerably busier during the summer, when boat tours, day-trippers, and cars all converge on the tiny village.
Virpazar is particularly convenient if you’re arriving via public transport, with bus connections across the country and a train station a little walk away. If you have a rental car, however, we’d recommend checking if your accommodation includes space for your car, because parking in Virpazar is a nightmare.

Rijeka Crnojevića
Rijeka Crnojevića is a small riverside settlement built around the famous horseshoe bend of the Crnojević River – the viewpoint known as Pavlova Strana is one of the best things to do around Lake Skadar. With an old stone bridge, steep green hills, riverfront restaurants, and boat trips with local fishermen, it’s a much quieter alternative base to Virpazar.
Rijeka Crnojevića has unusually important history for such a tiny settlement: Ivan Crnojević moved his capital here in the 15th century, and the town subsequently became an important political and cultural centre.
If you’re interested in taking a Lake Skadar boat trip from the quieter northern side, which has more waterways and birdlife than the open expanse of lake outside Virpazar, Rijeka Crnojevića is the place to stay.
Because Rijeka Crnojevića is an hour’s drive from Virpazar, you really need to choose one or the other as a base, but it’s easy to explore both and the wider region by car.
There’s only a handful of fairly basic accommodation and apartments in the tiny town, since most people visit on a day trip. There’s free roadside parking along the village, which can fill up in the daytime, but is handy if it’s included in your accommodation, as you can simply explore on foot.

Godinje
Godinje is a rural winemaking village, set only a 10-minute drive from Virpazar. It’s a particularly good choice if you’d rather wake up among vineyards and stone houses than beside a busy boat harbour, but still want access to the main tourist hub, shops, and boat tour operators.
The village has a long association with winemaking, with Vranac the standout local grape, and small family wineries offering a much more intimate experience than Montenegro’s larger commercial producers. Garnet Winery and Winery Tradicija are both beautiful places to enjoy a wine tasting with the warmest hosts and delicious wines (book in advance), but don’t offer accommodation. If you’re keen to stay in the heart of Godinje, Guest House Bato is a good choice.
You’re also well placed for exploring the southern side of Lake Skadar, including Pješačac Beach and Murići Beach, popular swimming spots. The only downside is you definitely need a car to stay in Godinje.

Crmnica wine region
The Crmnica wine region spreads across the hills and villages around the southern and western side of Lake Skadar, so this isn’t really one single place to stay. Instead, you’re choosing between small villages and rural properties surrounded by vineyards, with Boljevići, Limljani, Bukovik, and Gluhi Do among the wine-growing areas.
This is one of the best parts of the Lake Skadar region to stay if you’re interested in Montenegrin wine and food. Crmnica is particularly associated with the indigenous Vranac grape, alongside varieties including Kratošija and Krstač, and the region’s vineyards tend to be small and family-run rather than huge commercial estates.
There are plenty of wineries to seek out, including Eco Winery Lipovac and Kalimut, as well as smaller producers scattered through the villages. Most offer basic accommodation or rooms, which is fab if you’d like to stay somewhere beautiful in nature, enjoy a tasting, and not have to worry about driving after. We’d particularly recommend arranging accommodation or tastings in advance, as many of these aren’t the sort of wineries where you can simply turn up without warning.
There are also a handful of more boutique properties offering a more upscale stay, including Eco Resort Cermeniza and Eco Villas Merak, perfect for couples looking for something a little romantic.
The big advantage of staying in Montenegro’s wine region is that the accommodation itself becomes part of the experience. You can spend the morning exploring Lake Skadar, taking a boat tour, or swimming at one of the quieter beaches, then finish the day with a local wine tasting and homemade food among the vineyards at your accommodation. It’s super dreamy and was one of the highlights of our Montenegro road trip.

Lake Skadar Hotels
Hotels in Virpazar and around Lake Skadar are quite different from what you’ll find in Montenegro’s larger tourist destinations. Rather than huge resort hotels in Budva or katuns and cabins in Durmitor and Prokletije, you’ll find a mix of small family-run hotels, guesthouses, apartments, rural villas, and wine estates, many of which offer a much more personal experience. We found our money went a lot further in this region too, with most accommodations being much more reasonably priced than accommodation along the coast and in the Bay of Kotor.
For us, the most interesting places to stay are often the properties where the accommodation is part of the experience, whether that’s sleeping among vineyards, staying beside the lake, or waking up in a tiny historic village.

The best hotels in Virpazar
Virpazar has the largest concentration of conventional accommodation around Lake Skadar, although ‘hotel’ can be a fairly broad term here. You’ll find everything from simple family-run rooms and traditional guesthouses to newer boutique hotels with pools, restaurants, and wellness facilities. If you’re wondering where to stay near Virpazar, this section is for you.
1. Draga’s Rooms
Draga’s Rooms is a small, family-run guesthouse in the centre of Virpazar, making it particularly convenient if you’re planning an early boat trip or are reliant on public transport. This is much more of a basic but personal guesthouse experience than a conventional hotel, with straightforward rooms and a homely atmosphere rather than extensive resort facilities.
The biggest advantage of staying at Draga’s Rooms is the location, putting the restaurants, harbour, and narrow streets of Virpazar immediately outside your door. It features a self-contained apartment with air-conditioning, a private bathroom, and kitchenette, plus free WiFi.
Parking isn’t available on-site, but it’s perfect for travellers on a budget coming without a car. Draga’s Rooms also collaborate with Kingfisher, one of our favourite operators on the lake.

2. Hotel De’Andros
Hotel De’Andros is the most modern and luxurious accommodation in Virpazar, designed as a contemporary boutique-style property. The rooms and apartments range from compact doubles to much larger luxury apartments, with several offering lake or mountain views and private balconies.
The standout feature is the rooftop swimming pool overlooking Lake Skadar, alongside a restaurant, spa, and fitness centre, making this one of the few places around the lake where you can combine sightseeing with a more conventional hotel experience. It’s also right by the harbour, perfect for taking a boat trip.

The best wine hotels near Lake Skadar
If you’ve got a car, we’d recommend considering staying at one of the wine estates or rural properties around Crmnica rather than in Virpazar itself. These places tend to be smaller and more characterful, with vineyards, gardens, terraces, and homemade food replacing traditional hotel facilities, and several let you combine your accommodation with wine tasting without needing to organise a separate excursion.
Staying in a couple of local vineyards was a highlight of our trip. You can sort of split these kinds of accommodation into two categories: local etno-style homes that make homemade wine and more professional but still independent vineyards that offer accommodation on-site. Here is where we recommend.

3. Winery Lipovac
Eco Winery Lipovac Apartments, set in the rural village of Građani, around a 30-minute drive from Virpazar. The property offers double and triple rooms alongside a larger apartment, with private bathrooms, air conditioning, a shared kitchen, terraces, and mountain or countryside views. We were surprised how spacious the rooms were, absolutely adored the location, and enjoyed an evening wine tasting.
It’s a working winery, so don’t expect luxury, but you can join a winery tour to learn more about the production process, which is interesting. The host and his little dog Patrick were lovely, and we seriously think the price per night is a steal.
Winery Lipovac is the furthest accommodation from Lake Skadar on this list, but that’s partially why we liked it so much. It feels really rural and remote – the perfect place to unwind. If you have the time, we’d recommend doing what we did, which is staying somewhere right by the lake (in Rijeka Crnojevića or Virpazar) to do a boat trip and see the viewpoints, then add a night or two here at the end of your Skadar itinerary.

4. Eco Resort & Winery Cermeniza
Eco Resort Cermeniza is one of the most beautiful places to stay near Lake Skadar, combining a family winery with a small resort of 13 individual villas spread across a 5,000 m² property. The villas are designed with a blend of modern comforts and traditional Montenegrin influences, while the resort has two swimming pools, old vineyards, and a rustic wine cellar where tastings take place.
Accommodation ranges from compact villas to the larger Villa Cermeniza, which has a king-size bed, pool table, and indoor hot tub. We’d particularly choose this one for a romantic rural escape, as you get the privacy of a villa but still have plenty of facilities on site and stunning views of the countryside. Plus, it’s only a 5-minute drive from Virpazar.

5. Eco Villas Merak & Winery
Eco Villas Merak is another rural option just next to Eco Resort Cermeniza, with seven traditional stone villas set among the countryside. Each villa has a living area, kitchenette, dining space, private bathroom, and air conditioning, while the property has two outdoor pools and a family vineyard.
You can also use bicycles free of charge and enjoy complimentary tastings of the family’s homemade wine, while boat trips, kayaking, hiking, and cycling can be arranged nearby. It’s a particularly appealing option if you want space, a swimming pool and a taste of rural Montenegrin life without being too far from Virpazar.

6. Etno House Mira & Winery DSM Pejanović
Etno House Mira is a much more intimate alternative, set among the vineyards around Limljani, a 15-20 minute drive from Virpazar. It’s a simple, traditional-style property where the emphasis is on the wine, food, and hospitality rather than swimming pools or extensive hotel facilities.
The property offers spacious apartments with air-conditioned rooms, free parking, and WiFi, making it a good option if you’re travelling as a family. It’s run by Marco and his parents, Mira and Georgio, who are genuinely just the nicest people.
The family also create their own wines and rakijas, with a small tasting room downstairs, which is a fun way to try their creative concoctions, from raspberry wine to kiwi rakija. We had a very comfortable couple of nights here.

7. Villa Mond
Villa Mond is a comfortable set of rooms in a beautiful stone building in the countryside near Limljani. It’s more a private countryside stay than a conventional hotel, with the appeal coming from its peaceful setting, on-site vineyard, and proximity to Lake Skadar.
The self-contained apartments feature air conditioning, private bathrooms, and fully equipped kitchens with garden or mountain views. There’s also a sun terrace, garden, free WiFi, and breakfast on arrangement. You can also book a Homemade Meal & Wine Tasting Tour here.

8. Studio & Winery Kalimut
Another little winery and accommodation option just 10 minutes’ drive from Virpazar, Studio & Winery Kalimut is set in a rural country house with a garden and terrace. The rooms are basic but comfortable, ranging from doubles to triples and quadruples with free WiFi, air conditioning, and private bathrooms.
The family winery is a major part of the experience, with guests able to enjoy homemade wine alongside home-cooked breakfast and dinner, rather than simply treating the property as somewhere to sleep. There’s also a kitchenette, with a tea and coffee maker and refrigerator if you’d prefer to self-cater.

The best hotel in Rijeka Crnojevića
Rijeka Crnojevića has far fewer places to stay than Virpazar, but that’s part of its appeal. Accommodation in Rijeka Crnojevića is mostly small, locally owned guesthouses and family-run hotels, rather than conventional chain properties, and staying overnight gives you the chance to experience the village after the day-trippers have gone home.
9. Hotel S Family Jovićević
Hotel S Family Jovićević is where we chose to stay in Rijeka Crnojevića. It sits right in the heart of the town, beside the river and close to the famous old stone bridge, so the location is perfect. The family-run property has basic but comfortable air-conditioned rooms with private bathrooms, refrigerators, and TVs, with options overlooking the river, garden, mountains, or surrounding landmarks.
There’s also a restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, accommodating us with veggie/vegan dishes like pasta, a vegetarian version of Dalmatian stew, and homemade wine, and Dan also tried locally caught fish.
The property can also arrange activities including boat trips, fishing, and kayaking, making it a particularly practical base if you want to explore the river and northern side of Lake Skadar rather than stay in Virpazar.

Honourable Mentions
There are plenty of other interesting places to stay around Lake Skadar that didn’t quite make our main list. These are worth considering if you find somewhere that better suits your route, budget, or preferred style of accommodation.

Camping near Lake Skadar
Camping is possible around Lake Skadar, but you shouldn’t assume that you can simply pitch a tent anywhere beside the lake because you’re visiting a national park and much of the shoreline consists of protected wetlands or privately owned land.
Wild camping is illegal in Montenegro, although often tolerated in more remote areas. But the lake is much busier than the remote northern mountains, so we wouldn’t personally risk it.
Unlike national parks like Biogradska Gora, there’s no official free camping area at Lake Skadar. The safest approach is to use designated campsites or established private camping areas, particularly around the villages and main visitor areas.

Lake Skadar Accommodation FAQs
To help you choose where to stay near Lake Skadar, we’ve answered these frequently asked questions.
Where to stay for Lake Skadar, Montenegro?
For most first-time visitors to Lake Skadar, we’d recommend Virpazar accommodation because it’s the main tourism hub, with the widest choice of boat trips, restaurants, shops and places to stay. There are also plenty of Virpazar hotels, from simple family-run properties to newer boutique hotels. If you’d prefer somewhere quieter, Rijeka Crnojevića accommodation is a great alternative, while the surrounding wine villages and rural estates are ideal if you have a car and want a more peaceful stay.
What is the closest town to Lake Skadar National Park?
There isn’t one single town that’s closest to the whole of Lake Skadar National Park because the lake and park cover a huge area. Virpazar is generally considered the main gateway and is the most convenient base for exploring the lake, particularly if you’re interested in boat trips. Rijeka Crnojevića is another important access point for the northern part of the lake.
Can you stay in Lake Skadar National Park?
Yes, although accommodation within the park itself is limited and tends to consist of small guesthouses, rural properties, eco-villages, and private rooms rather than large hotels. Some of the best options are actually in or around the small settlements surrounding the lake, putting you close to nature while still giving you access to restaurants, boat trips, and other facilities.
How many nights should you stay in Lake Skadar National Park?
We’d recommend at least 2 nights at Lake Skadar if you want to properly experience the area rather than simply take a boat trip and leave. 2 or 3 nights gives you time for a boat trip, some birdwatching, a swim, a wine tasting, and a little exploring without constantly rushing between different parts of the lake. If you’re combining Lake Skadar with Montenegro’s coast, you can certainly see the highlights on a shorter visit, but we’d personally give it longer (we stayed 2 nights in Rijeka Crnojevića and 5 nights in the wine region outside Virpazar, split across an estate and a local guesthouse).
Do you need a car to stay near Lake Skadar National Park?
You don’t need a car if you stay in Virpazar, particularly if your main plans are taking a boat trip and exploring the village. Public transport can get you to some of the main settlements, but services are limited, and the most interesting rural accommodation, wineries, and swimming spots can be difficult to reach without your own transport. We’d definitely recommend a rental car if you’re planning to stay outside the main hub.
Is it better to stay in Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevića?
Whether Virpazar or Rijeka Crnojevića is best depends on what you want from your trip. Virpazar is better for convenience, public transport, restaurants, and having lots of boat tours to choose from, while Rijeka Crnojevića is quieter, more scenic, and better suited to travellers who want to explore the Crnojević River and northern waterways. There are fewer hotels in Rijeka Crnojevića and generally less choice overall, but that small-scale atmosphere is part of its appeal.
Is accommodation in Lake Skadar National Park expensive?
Accommodation around Lake Skadar ranges from inexpensive family-run rooms and apartments to boutique hotels, private villas, and more unusual vineyard stays, so there are options for most budgets. It’s generally good value compared with Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, although prices vary considerably depending on the type of property and time of year. As a rough guide, simple guesthouses and apartments can start at around €30-50 per night, while comfortable hotels and boutique properties are often around €60-120, with higher-end wine estates and villas reaching €150+ per night during the summer.
