What are the Bacalar Rapids?

The Bacalar Rapids, known as Los Rápidos, are a series of shallow, turquoise-colored, flowing currents where the fresh water of Bacalar Lagoon meets a narrow channel. Unlike fast, turbulent rapids, these are calm, creating a unique spot like a natural lazy river, perfect for floating.

This area is also famous for its ecological importance, as it’s home to ancient stromatolites, colonies of microorganisms that date back 3.5 billion years and are some of the oldest life forms on Earth. The crystal-clear waters allow you to see the riverbed and these fragile fossils, while you float along the river.

Where is Los Rápidos?

Bacalar’s rapids are located at the southern tip of Bacalar Lagoon, about 7 miles (11 km) south of downtown Bacalar. The site sits near the point where the lagoon’s fresh water channels into a narrow, rocky stretch, creating the rapids effect.

The site is easily accessible by road, making it a popular stop for both locals and tourists. It’s also included in some boat tours of Bacalar Lagoon.

The map below highlights the various parts of Bacalar Lagoon leading up to the rapids, as well as areas of importance around the rapids.

Things to do at Los Rápidos Bacalar

Los Rápidos Bacalar is a private attraction with a small entrance fee that gives you access to a variety of activities. There are various sections around the site, including the main restaurant area, platforms and palapas for lounging, and a boardwalk through the mangroves and stromatolites to the start of the rapids. Signs, swings, and cabañas are dotted around, perfect for a little photo op, too.

There’s plenty to do in Los Rápidos

1. Float down the lazy river

Relaxing in the gentle current is the main draw at Los Rápidos. You can float with the flow on tubes or simply by yourself, using the buoyancy of the life jacket and the natural movement of the water to carry you downstream. The jacket does ride up a little, but you can slide your legs through the armholes instead of wearing it around your chest, so it’s more like a seat for more comfort.

The cool, clear water is perfect for cooling off on a hot day. The river is surrounded by jungle scenery, and the water is clear enough to see the stromatolites, so it’s a scenic ride, too.

To float down the river at Los Rápidos, you first walk all the way to the end of the boardwalk. You can get in earlier, as there are several ladders to help you get in the water, but get in at the very end for the longest ride. It’s important not to enter the water at any point without a designated platform to protect the delicate stromatolites.

Some parts of the river are faster than others as you navigate the currents. The floating whole experience from the top to the bottom lasts less than 10 minutes and is faster if you kayak. Then, you can simply use the ladders to climb out and go again.

2. Kayak the channel

For those seeking a bit more activity, kayaking through the rapids offers a peaceful, low-impact adventure. Paddle along the narrow channels and get closer views of the stromatolites and aquatic life. Kayaking also provides a great vantage point for photos and birdwatching.

You can easily rent a kayak at Los Rápidos. It’s also possible to rent a kayak from elsewhere along the lagoon, like Laguna Bonanza (a nearby entry point with its own entrance fee but no rapids) or from an operator on the lagoon itself if you’re up for a longer journey.

3. See the stromatolites

Los Rápidos is one of the best places in the world to see stromatolites, ancient microbial formations that look like layered rock mounds. These living fossils have been growing for thousands of years and are protected due to their rarity and ecological importance. Visitors can admire them from designated areas like the boardwalk in Los Rápidos without disturbing the delicate formations.

4. Walk the boardwalk

A wooden boardwalk runs along part of Los Rápidos, offering easy access and safe walking paths over the water and through mangroves and past stromatolites. It connects the seating and lounging areas to the rapids and is really designed for one-way traffic, as you hop in the water at the end and float back down. But if you’d prefer to stay dry, it is possible to walk along the boardwalk both ways. On your way back, there are several little platforms along the boardwalk (designed for entering the water), where you can scoot over to pass by other visitors heading down.

5. Lounge on the platforms

Several floating and fixed platforms provide comfortable spots to relax, sunbathe, or enjoy a drink while surrounded by water. These platforms give visitors the option to rest between swims or simply take in the scenery. There’s also a double-level cabaña and seating dotted around at various parts. It’s a great way to enjoy the lagoon’s peacefulness without getting fully wet.

6. Eat in the restaurant

On-site, there’s a restaurant and bar offering local cuisine and international classics, snacks, and drinks like sodas, cocktails, and beers. Extend your stay and enjoy a meal with scenic views of the lagoon and rapids. The food tends to focus on fresh, regional ingredients, with dishes like guacamole and chips, ceviche, and pizza.

How to get from Bacalar to Los Rápidos

Los Rápidos is easily reachable from Bacalar town by car, taxi, bike, kayak, or boat. By road, it’s about a 10-15 minute drive south along the main highway (Catarata 307), with parking available near the entrance.

It’s important to bear in mind that the rapids entrance is actually 1.5 miles (2.4 km) down a sideroad off the highway. It’s unpaved and not great for walking, although some budget-savvy travellers do take this option. You can get dropped off at the junction by ADO bus, colectivo, or taxi and walk, which is the cheapest option at about 50 pesos (~$2.60 USD). You might have a long wait at the side of the highway for a bus or colectivo to pass on your way back, though.

Alternatively, you can catch a taxi from the town centre or your hotel, which should cost about 200 pesos (~$10 USD) each way. Get the WhatsApp number of your driver so you can arrange the return journey. Bear in mind that the gate to the sideroad to the rapids doesn’t open until 10:00 AM, when the site opens. If you arrive earlier, you’ll likely sit in a queue with the metre running, which can be costly.

For adventurous types, kayaking down Bacalar Lagoon provides a scenic and active way to arrive.

Boat taxis and tours from Bacalar’s docks often include Los Rápidos as a stop. Boat tours of Bacalar Lagoon also include other popular landmarks like Bacalar’s cenotes, the Priates’ Canal, and Bird Island, too.

Biking is an option, but it’s quite far along the main road, so not really suitable for casual vacationers.

Once you’ve paid, you’ll be given a wristband, which acts as your ticket.

We had such a fun time at Los Rápidos. Floating gently through the shallow rapids was such a unique feeling. We enjoyed admiring the stromatolites, swimming in the beautiful surroundings, and some delicious guac and chips in the restaurant. The boardwalk provided easy access to the river, there were some great photo spots, and we had such fun flying the drone (with permission) and seeing the crystal-clear waters from above.
