About Monteverde Cloud Forest

Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve (Reserva Biologica Bosque Nuboso Monteverde) is a protected reserve in the heart of Costa Rica. Literally translating to ‘Green Mountain’, Monteverde is home to a unique ecosystem known as a cloud forest. Cloud forests only make up 1% of all forests worldwide. They are tropical or subtropical mountainous forests characterised by a persistent cover of clouds, which usually cling to trees at canopy level.

Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the best things to do in Monteverde. It is a really ecologically important area and conservation efforts here are some of the best in the world. Monteverde Cloud Forest is home to four of Costa Rica’s 12 life zones. A huge variety of plants and animals call Monteverde home and the Cloud Forest Biological Preserve is one of the most biodiverse places you could ever visit.

Monteverde Cloud Forest Facts

  • Size: 10,500 hectares (25,946 acres)
  • Elevation: 1330 m (4360 ft) above sea level
  • Habitat: Cloud Forest
  • Location: Monteverde
  • Established: 1972

Cloud Forests are really important for the planet as the water condenses on the leaves of the trees, dripping to the forest floor. Despite the name, it’s actually mist and not cloud that shrouds the forest. This is a result of the high elevation and high humidity, which causes moisture to pool around foliage and tree canopies. From here, it enters streams and rivers in a process known as fog drip. These vital water sources create dense forests and lush wetland areas that are vital for many species of flora and fauna.

However, that’s not to say you should discount Monteverde Cloud Forest. It’s popular for a reason. It is estimated that about 50% of Costa Rica’s biodiversity may be found within this cloud forest, so it really is one of the best places to see wildlife in the country. That’s an impressive 2.5% of the total world’s biodiversity! If you have the time, we’d recommend visiting both cloud forests and deciding for yourself which is best.

Hummingbirds expend a huge amount of energy fluttering their wings at a remarkable 80 times per second! When to visit Monteverde Cloud Forest

Unfortunately, climate change has hit Monteverde hard. A local we met told us that weather patterns have changed drastically in the last 20 years but most dramatically in the last 5 years alone. This means the area is seeing more extreme weather and rainier wet seasons. Here’s a breakdown of the weather you can expect in Monteverde Cloud Forest by season:

  • Dry season (December to April): This is the best time to visit Monteverde if you want the best weather.
  • Wet season (July to November): This is the best time to visit Monteverde if you want to avoid the crowds and take advantage of cheaper prices but persistent rain can lead to closures, uneven roads, and muddy trails.
  • Green season (May and June): Green season can be hit and miss in Monteverde, with anything from scattered afternoon showers to constant rain depending on the year.

It’s worth remembering that most of Monteverde is covered in cloud forest which produces a lot of cloud and looks so lush because it receives a lot of rain all year round.

What time of day is best for Monteverde Cloud Forest?

The best time of day to visit Monteverde Cloud Forest is as soon as the reserve opens. Earlier in the morning is the quietest time, meaning you’ll have the trails all to yourself and be more likely to see more wildlife, which is also most active at dawn and dusk. The cloud forest is busiest between mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Monteverde Cloud Forest History

Monteverde Cloud Forest has a fascinating history. Evidence of human settlement dates back to around 3000 BC.

American Quakers settled in the Monteverde area in the 1950s and established a simple life that revolved around dairy farming and cheese production. In the 1970s, visiting scientists George and Harriett Powell and a local Quaker named Wilford Guindon recognised the importance of protecting the local area as it was threatened by continued agricultural development.

In 1972, a nature reserve was created, with the help of the Tropical Science Center, and Monteverde Cloud Forest was officially established.

In 1977, a BBC documentary about Monteverde’s cloud forests was aired, dramatically increasing interest in the region and conservation efforts.

Now, it is one of the most biodiverse and unique ecosystems in the world.
